Motion to Redact Document

11. U.S.C. § 107
Fed. R. Bankr. P. 9037(h)

Unless the court orders otherwise, electronic or paper filings may only include:

  • the last four digits of a Social Security
  • the last four digits of a taxpayer identification number
  • the year of birth of an individual
  • the minor's initials, and
  • the last four digits of the financial account number

A party wishing to redact a previously filed document must file a motion and proposed order with the court.

The motion must:

  • identify the proposed redaction(s).
  • include the docket or proof-of-claim number of the previously filed document.
  • have (as an attachment) a proposed redacted document.

When the movant is not the filer of the original document: Motion to Redact Document Filed by Other Party (MSSB-MRD-2) and Proposed Order Granting Motion to Redact filed by Other Party (MSSB-ORD-2)

The movant must serve the redaction motion and proposed redacted document on:

*It is not necessary to reopen a case when the sole purpose to reopen is to redact information from the case record. If a party files a motion to reopen for the sole purpose to file a motion to redact, no fee is due.

File an Amended Motion

  1. File amended motion using the above docket event;
  2. In the receipt field enter the receipt number for the filing fee payment made for the original motion; and
  3. Select "Amended" from the drop-down prefix list.
